A dental crown, or “cap,” is a tooth-shaped cover custom-designed to fit over a broken, chipped, fractured, or broken tooth to restore its shape, appearance, and function. A dental crown is commonly placed after a root canal or dental implant procedure, but can also be applicable in aesthetic cases to improve a smile by changing the alignment or the shape of teeth.
Unlike removable dentures, crowns protect the tooth by permanently attaching to it, requiring no special maintenance beyond maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits.
There are different types of dental crowns. Our dentist may recommend a certain type of dental crown for your unique situation, customizing to ensure they blend in with your surrounding, natural teeth.
Among its benefits, prosthetic crowns or bridges:
- Replace missing teeth or restore worn-down teeth
- Protect weakened teeth with large fillings or previous Root Canal Therapy (RCT)
- Prolong the natural functions and aesthetics of teeth
- Weak teeth — A weak tooth caused by severe decay may lead to breaking if not protected immediately. Dental crowns are placed on weak or damaged teeth to protect and cover them, preventing them from breaking. The crown will protect the tooth from further damage that may expose it to infection.
- Cracked teeth — Crowns hold parts of a cracked tooth together and restore its natural shape and appearance. If you have chipped off just a small piece of tooth enamel, using a dental filling may be effective, but major fractures require crowns to be able to restore full function.
- Worn teeth – Patients have worn teeth due to grinding (bruxism), acid reflux disease, or dental erosion. In cases like these, the bite can collapse, but crowns can restore the teeth to their normal size.
- Large fillings — If a tooth is severely infected, a root canal is often performed over it to save it from extraction, but this leaves out a hollow and weaker core. Crowns cover and support teeth with large fillings to protect them from fracturing.
- Tooth discoloration – When teeth are discolored, crowns may be used to cover them as well as improve their shape to eliminate the appearance of gaps in the teeth.
Usually, a dental bridge is anchored to a patient’s healthy teeth on either side of the gap in the mouth. The purpose of a dental bridge is to restore the bite and help maintain the natural shape of the patient’s face and mouth.
